Introduction of Omada Identity Cloud at KSB SE & Co. KGaA

Case Study: KSB SE & Co. KGaA

Initial Situation

KSB SE & Co. KGaA, headquartered in Frankenthal, is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of pumps, valves, and systems for water and wastewater technology, energy supply, and industrial processes. As an internationally operating company with numerous locations, KSB is subject to the highest requirements regarding IT security, compliance, and efficient access management. The previously used Identity & Access Management solution was based on Microsoft Identity Manager (MIM), which increasingly reached its functional and technological limits. The management of user accounts, permissions, and processes was partially manual, difficult to scale, and no longer met all current compliance requirements.

Objectives

The objective of the project was the complete replacement of the existing MIM environment through the introduction of a modern, cloud-based Identity Governance & Administration (IGA) solution – Omada Identity Cloud. In addition to the technological renewal, the following benefits were to be achieved:

  • Introduction of self-services for users, including the request and approval of technical identities such as service accounts and external users.
  • Automated assignment and review of permission
  • Comprehensive auditing and logging capabilities to meet compliance requirements
  • Integration of the leading HR system Workday.
  • Flexible connection of target systems such as Active Directory, Entra ID, and Exchange Hybrid, as well as additional systems, whether on-premises or in the cloud.

Implementation

The implementation was carried out by PlanB. GmbH with an interdisciplinary team, including team members who had already designed the original MIM solution at KSB. This existing know-how was a key success factor and played a decisive role in the selection of the partner.

Together with the customer, all functional and technical processes were redefined and mapped into a three-tier system landscape (Development, QA, Production). The introduction was carried out using the changeset mechanism available in Omada, which ensures secure and traceable migration of new functionalities.

Integration into KSB’s hybrid IT environment was realized via security-optimized VPN connections, while Omada’s REST API was used to supply additional third-party systems with identity information.“With the new IGA solution based on Omada Identity Cloud, we have taken an important step into the future. In particular, the close collaboration with PlanB. GmbH, who already had a deep understanding of our existing systems, was a key success factor in the project. The new solution not only elevates us technologically to a new level, but also noticeably simplifies many everyday processes. At the same time, it strengthens our security standards through centralized and transparent access management.”Kai Weitzel, IT Project Manager at KSB SE & Co. KGaA

Project Results

The introduction of Omada Identity Cloud has provided KSB not only with a future-proof platform for identity and access management, but also unlocked new potential:

  • Reduction of manual effort through automated processes.
  • Transparency and traceability of access decisions and workflows.
  • Improved security through regular recertifications and controlled access.
  • Flexible scalability and extensibility for future requirements while reducing complexity and infrastructure demands.
  • Compliance with all relevant governance and compliance requirements.
